Get To Know More about Your European Health Insurance Card

Travel insurance is something that everyone should carry around when they are in a foreign country. You can select different plans and features that you might like to include in your travel policy. With luggage insurance to medical benefits covering you, traveling in a foreign land can be relaxing.

European citizens can avail certain health care benefits and services free or at discounted rates if they have a valid EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) with them while travelling within European Economic Area which also includes Switzerland. An EHIC card should not be considered as a substitute for travel insurance. Citizens with EHIC cards can avail exclusive discounts and free services in case they fall ill or get into some medical emergency in a foreign European country which also includes Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Earlier E111 Cards were used for the similar purpose which was then replaced by EHIC cards in the year 2006. So if you still have an E111 card, you can discard it as it will be of no use now. Applying and Renewing EHIC card is completely free of cost. You can apply for new or renewal by filling a form from your local post office, supermarkets, community halls and even your local healthcare centers.

Remember EHIC card will only cover state approved treatments. It would not include your luggage or money conversions. It is advised to keep travel insurance along with your EHIC card. Though EHIC card is valid for five years but most people skip renewing EHIC card which can bring unexpected problem once you find that you have an expired card with you while travelling. A safe way to keep you EHIC card up to date is to renew it six months before its expiry date so you can stay in peace while traveling. You are required to have EHIC for each member of the family which is valid for five years.

Certain companies undertake the burden from your mind by assisting you with the whole EHIC process. From application to follow-ups with the healthcare officials to renewing EHIC card, such company executives make your paperwork easier and tension free. Such a company is EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD; you can visit their website and check for details and eligibility that are required to EHIC Apply or you can consult with their executives for better understanding.
